Call Me A Woman Please
When I turn 18 will you call me a woman?
If not, when I am 21, 30 or maybe 50?
How old must I be before you call me a woman?
When I am a wife will you call me a woman?
When I become a mother, CEO, doctor or soldier will you call me a woman then?
Who do I have to be for you to call me a woman?
You call us girls no matter our age or credentials.
And even worse sluts, chics, bitches, broads, hos and tramps, Just to name a few.
From trashy songs and movies, in classrooms, sports fields, boardrooms, TV and radio stations.
Money and jokes are made and all of us pay.
Maybe you don’t realize trashy names trash our lives.
Your daughters, your sisters, mothers and grandmothers alike, Misjudged, labeled, beaten, mutilated, raped and killed.
All around the world.
We give ourselves away in the name of marriage, from one man to another.
Our children are named after him.
Our last names lost forever.
Sometimes entire names lost when she becomes Mrs. John Smith.
First name and family name gone.
That used to be called slavery.
Boys on the other hand are boys and then men.
Oftentimes they are referred to as gentlemen.
There doesn’t seem to be any confusion when he becomes a man.
Never a slut, maybe a stud.
Always a Mr., single or otherwise.
Oh to live with such simplicity, fairness and respect.
If I say please and act ladylike will you call me a woman?
I know when I get angry or become a boss, it is likely you will call me a bitch.
If I dress a certain way or am seen with a certain someone it is likely you will call me a slut.
So tell me please. I really need to know before it’s too late.
How must I act before you call me a woman?
Who must I be and how much longer must I wait?
